Imagine Miles Morales (Spider-Man) slinging around town and keeping watch over Brooklyn. He is not going to let anyone, or anything, bring harm to the city or its people. This is the image that we get in Proverbs 4:23, “Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.”

Guarding our hearts means that we remain vigilant, making sure that nothing or no one harms our hearts. Some things aren’t good for us but seem attractive anyway. It is worth staying away from those things—they make us prone to more attacks.

The good news is that we have a Christian community that can help guard our hearts, and God’s peace that will guard our hearts and minds as we live in Jesus (Philippians 4:7). Keep your Spidey-senses sharp and keep watch over your heart.
