When school, including more difficult classes, assignments, and exams, becomes overwhelming, what do you usually turn to? Here are some practical ways to manage stress in school.

1. Find a workout that you like.

When it feels like your assignments are causing you to drown, get up and move! Visit the campus gym and check out any group fitness classes. Join an intramural sport. Or, with friends, play frisbee on the quad like they show in almost every college movie.

2. Don’t be afraid to ask for help.

Ask your friends, classmates and/or professors for help if you need clarification. Your classmates are excellent resources because they may have a different perspective on notes. Your professor most likely has office hours, and they may be excited when you come during those hours.

3. Get 7-8 hours of sleep each night.

You may be tempted to stay awake all night to cram for an exam, and sometimes, you have to. But make sure you get those 7-8 hours of sleep—your mind and body need it.

4. Have a creative hobby.

Studies show that art therapy can help reduce stress. Pick up a creative hobby like painting, coloring, reading, journaling, writing or playing an instrument. This can help you process emotions and focus on yourself.

5. Journal your feelings.

Write about what you’re stressed about. Carve out 30 minutes of your morning to write about your day and what it looks like. Write three ways how you can keep yourself from stressing too much. Then pray about it. Talk to God about your stressors and ask Him to help you as work through them.

6. Practice breathing techniques.

When you’re feeling stressed, practice breathing techniques. Breathe deeply through your nose, hold your breath for five seconds, and then release. Repeat when you’re feeling stressed.
