Self-care isn’t just an option, it’s necessary in order to protect your mind and mental well-being. Allowing yourself time to care for yourself will better you in the long run. Here are seven self-care practices that actually work when you’re having a rough day or feeling anxious and overwhelmed.

1. Take a break.
The best and easiest thing when you’re having a rough day, stressed or just overwhelmed is to take a mental break. Take a step back and sit alone for a while, go for a walk or exercise—whatever you do to make yourself feel better.

2. Sleep.
There’s a reason why doctors and medical professionals tell you to get eight or nine hours of sleep per night—it’s healthy! Sleep. Your life depends on it.

3. Get outside.
Sometimes, a breath of fresh air is all you need. Track your steps and compete with friends to make it fun!

4. Journal.
Instead of picking up your phone in the morning, start your day with journaling. Even if it is writing down three things you are thankful for!

5. Eat Well.
A healthy diet is not only good for your physical health, but your mental health. Eat well-balanced, healthy meals.

6. Talk about your feelings…
…with a trusted friend, adult or counselor. It’s a sign of strength, not weakness.

7. Seek professional help.
We all get tired or overwhelmed by how we feel or when things don’t go as planned. If things are getting too much for you and you feel you can’t cope, ask for help. Again—it’s a sign of strength, not weakness.
