Music Review: Toby MacDamien Horne reviews music artists Toby Mac, Trip Lee and Tedashii this month.
When you mention Christian music, there’s really no way of not mentioning the name TobyMac! This songwriter, performer, producer and author has been around since the late 80s. One of the founding members of the trio group DC Talk, TobyMac has truly made his mark on Christian music. In 2000, Toby decided to embark on his own solo career and began to blaze new trails! He has since then charted 20 singles on Billboard’s Hot Christian Songs Chart and became only the third Christian artist to have a #1 debut on the Billboard 200 Chart with “Eye On It.” Between DC Talk and his solo career, Toby has sold more than, get this, 10 million albums! And to top it off, he is a not one, not two, but seven-time Grammy award winner! One of my favorite things about his music is the blending of genres from rock, pop, hip-hop and more! Not like this needs to be said, but if you haven’t experienced TobyMac’s musical journey, do yourself a favor and download his music. You won’t be disappointed!
Trip Lee is one of the founders of the 116 Clique. He is a hip-hop artist, singer, poet and author based in Dallas. Trip’s flow is current and passionate, his lyrics are raw in nature and still hopeful and elevating! One of my favorite tracks by him is “Sweet Victory,” featuring Dimitri McDowell and Leah Smith.
“His deep voice and dynamic style, alongside David Crowder singing the hook, will pull you right into the powerful lyrics.”
If you look at the Christian hip-hop culture and music over the last 10 years, the 116 Clique has been one of its major influencers! Tedashii is an artist from this crew who has made a name for himself. Check out his latest song, “Home.” His deep voice and dynamic style, alongside David Crowder singing the hook, will pull you right into the powerful lyrics!
