Bringing “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” To Our TV Screens

"What I’ve found most compelling is its depiction of the mythological Greek gods." By Micah Trimmer

As his world changes, Percy Jackson finds himself at the center of a potentially catastrophic family clash. Based on the successful book series by Rick Riordan, the story of “The Lightning Thief” has been adapted years before both on film and onstage, so Disney’s TV series isn’t breaking new ground, but as a show, it works pretty well. The acting can be hit or miss in the early half of the show, but solid supporting characters, world-building and competent art direction help offset some of the show’s weaker points. While I don’t have as much experience with the franchise as the fans, I think it’s a solid show with things that I’ve found strange but entertaining, i.e., why the entire Greek Pantheon is located in the USA.

What I’ve found most compelling is its depiction of the mythological Greek gods. Simply put, they’re horrible, and if you look historically, this was always the case. Infidelity, betrayal, hypocrisy, malice. Read any of Homer’s works and you’ll see the gods rife with these traits. In contrast, our God is described as compassionate and loving. “The Lord is compassionate and merciful, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love” (Psalm 103:8). I encourage you to read the rest of Psalm 103 because you will find a God who cares and loves us despite our flaws and sins.
