A Disney+ original, “Tales of the Jedi,” is brief, but a great lesson in small, shortform storytelling. Anyone expecting a huge plot or deep personal narrative is sure to be disappointed, but it makes up for it with articulate storytelling. Fans of “The Clone Wars” and “The Bad Batch” are sure to appreciate the animation style, improving every new series with a fluidity and expressiveness impossible for live-action. The series consists of six 10-ish minute episodes; three following Jedi Master Dooku, three focused on Ahsoka. While I found the Dooku episodes to be compelling, giving insight into his eventual fall to the Dark side, the Ahsoka stories, while fun, were not very interesting. Anyone familiar with Ahsoka’s story isn’t going to be learning anything new. Central to the Dooku story is the question of who the Jedi really serves. Do they serve the people or the senate? Selfishness or selflessness? The Force or Politics? Dooku will inevitably choose the wrong side, despite his good intentions. It is necessary for people and institutions to evaluate their motives and actions. Are our actions motivated by the love of God or self? Are we listening to the Word of God or the current social narrative? 2 Corinthians 13:5 (NIV) says, “Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you—unless, of course, you fail the test?” My friends, I pray that we would not fail this test.
