Joan of Arc was an amazing figure in medieval history. She was born in the village of Domrémy in northeastern France in 1412. Her short life of 19 years left a permanent mark on French history. Joan of Arc is known and admired worldwide for her devout faith and personal courage even seven centuries later. 

Intense religious fervor was the hallmark of Joan’s life. Raised in a devout Catholic family, she testified to seeing visions and hearing voices that she identified as saints and angels guiding her. At 13, she received a divine calling to support Charles VII, the eldest son and heir to the king of France, in his quest to reclaim the French throne from English domination during the Hundred Years’ War (1337-1453). In her words, “I was in my 13th year when I heard a voice from God to help me govern my conduct. And the first time, I was very much afraid.” 

Undeterred by the social norms restricting women from participating in warfare, Joan convinced Charles VII to allow her to accompany the army. In 1429, Joan played a decisive role in lifting the siege of Orléans, a turning point in the war. Her  outstanding military proficiency and unwavering commitment to her divine mission inspired the troops and re-instilled hope throughout the French army. 

Later that year, 17-year-old Joan accompanied Charles VII to his coronation as king of France. Regrettably, despite numerous triumphs, her future took a dark turn. In 1430, she faced a politically motivated trial. The Church accused her of heresy, witchcraft and dressing in men’s clothing! 

Throughout the staged trial, Joan conducted herself with extraordinary courage and conviction. Sadly, in 1431, at the age of 19, she was sentenced to death and burned at the stake in Rouen, France. Her death became a symbol of resistance and martyrdom—a legacy that remains! 

The Catholic Church retried Joan’s case in 1456 and declared her innocent of all charges. She was canonized as a saint in 1920, recognizing her brief and extraordinary life. Joan of Arc embodies a unique juncture of spirituality, patriotism and courage. Her story has inspired countless works in various art forms, solidifying her place as a national hero in France and a symbol of resilience and faith worldwide.
