For many of us, January serves as a time of reflection. In the last year, we may have experienced happiness, pain, loss or great achievement. No matter what we’ve gone through, I think we can all agree that God has been the “fourth man in the fire time after time.” The song “Trust in God,” which became popular at the end of 2023, is the perfect listen for this kind of reflection. It tastefully mixes lyrics from the hymn “Blessed Assurance,” with new, original lyrics.

One of my favorite examples of this is, “Perfect submission, all is at rest / I know the author of tomorrow has ordered my steps.” This helps us think about words we’ve heard time and time again in a new way, giving us room to reflect on how the lyrics may be evident in our own lives. Although the song can seem repetitive and simple, I believe the repetition helps with emphasis and personal reflection, rather than becoming redundant.

“Trust in God” perfectly summarizes every Christian’s testimony: “I sought the Lord, and He heard, and He answered.” We are blessed to see another year, and we can walk with the confidence that God will never fail!

“God’s Got Me” by the musical group Anthony Brown & group therAPy is a happy, upbeat song that serves as an affirmation that God will handle anything that comes our way. I love when contemporary songs include old hymns and spirituals, and this song does just that with the inclusion of the spiritual “All Night, All Day.”

I love this song, “The Place Where I Belong,” because of its simplicity. The loud voices of the congregation and the stripped-down sound of acoustic instrumentation make the song sound like it could’ve been recorded right in your home church. The lyrics remind us that we can find our rest in the heart of Jesus.
