One of the most exciting parts of December is hearing Christmas songs on the radio. Most of us can enjoy a classic Christmas song. Those steady jingle bells, falling diatonic lines and cheery lyrics will get us in the holiday mood every time. This Christmas, I was looking to find some holiday hits that I hadn’t heard before. I listened to a Christmas playlist on Apple Music, and there was one song in particular that I could not get out of my head. It was a song released last year entitled, “Officially Christmas” by Dan + Shay. The song itself is nothing special. With lyrics such as, “It’s officially Christmas, and I’m officially yours. I’m officially wishing for something not in the store,” it screams cheesy Christmas love song. The song itself is repetitive, the melody is predictable and it has those classic brass features that we hear in every holiday song. Those things that made it so common, however, made the song so catchy. I mean, I couldn’t stop singing it. “Officially Christmas” is the Christmas song version of a romantic comedy. If you’re looking for a light-hearted, upbeat, lovey-dovey Christmas song, this is definitely one to add to the playlist.

I was shocked to find a Christmas song by Frank Sinatra that I hadn’t heard on the radio a million times. “We Wish You the Merriest” is a fun one, giving all the classic Christmas feels. It’s very showy; you can almost see it being performed on a big stage.

Another Christmas song I heard for the first time this year is “Snowman” by Sia. It has a steady 6/8 feel and is cute and simple. Typical to Sia’s style, the lyrics are slightly hard to understand, so you might have to look up the lyrics to catch it all.
