Maverick City Music

If you’ve attended a Christian summer camp, then you’ve probably noticed there always seems to be a song of the summer. The one that is used during every service, the one that everyone knows and the one that seems to touch people in a deep way. For the camp I worked at this summer, that song was “Refiner,” a Maverick City Music song originally released back in 2019. The lyrics to the song contain a bold and passionate prayer: “I wanna be tried by fire, purified. You take whatever you desire. Lord, here’s my life.” If we step back to think, this is an extremely challenging request to make. Are we truly willing for God to clean our hands, purify our hearts and burn up anything in our lives that doesn’t belong? Listen to this song in your time of reflection and see if this is a step that you’re willing to take.

For many, the musical “In the Heights” was the first movie they saw in theaters since the pandemic started. The musical, written by Lin-Manuel Miranda (creator of Hamilton), features a mix of Latin styles: salsa, merengue, hip-hop, bachata and more! The soundtrack provides an inspiring story of love, passion and honor.

Honestly, sometimes we like listening to sad songs, dramatically singing our hearts out. If the end of the summer has you in your feelings, listen to Khalid’s single, “New Normal.” While the lyrics talk about uncertainty and the uncomfortable feelings that change and endings bring, the beat just might have you dancing.
