Melvin Crispell, III—A New Worship Artist to Watch
"I love the message of this song, announcing how there’s nothing too hard for God to handle."Each year, I love looking at the Christian and Gospel Grammy nominations. Not only is it exciting to see Christian music held to such esteem, but it’s also fun to find artists who I may not have listened to before. This year, my discovery was Melvin Crispell, III. Although the son of wonderful musicians, Melvin has only been releasing music for the last five years or so. In that time, he’s become a Grammy, Dove, and Stellar award nominee. His song “Yesterday” is on the nominee list for Best Gospel Performance/Song—and rightfully so! On the first listen, I was immediately impressed by his vocals. He effortlessly soars to the top of his range and, like many gospel artists, is not afraid to throw in tasteful yet intricate runs and riffs. The instrumentation and background vocals are simple enough to let his storytelling and passionate vocals shine. But also I love the message of this song, announcing how there’s nothing too hard for God to handle. The song speaks of the decision to put your trust in God and leave the worry and fear in the past, because He can handle it all.

Although I can’t predict this year’s winner of Producer of the Year at the time of writing this, I was excited to see Dan Nigro on the list of nominees. With notable pop stars under his wing, I think Dan’s talent for producing is clear. I think he has more success coming his way!

Seeing a newer artist like Forrest Frank on the nominee list for Best Contemporary Christian Performance/Song, alongside names like Maverick City Music, Brandon Lake, and Elevation Worship, is exciting. I’ve always admired Forrest’s positive lyrics and his ability to mix the old sounds with the new. He brings a great sound to Christian and secular music alike.
