Going Deeper with the General

What is one example of God’s intervention in your life?

Don’t tell anyone, but I can be stubborn. God’s interventions have mostly focused on my surrender and obedience. Saying ‘yes’ to God is not always easy. Abraham and Sarah said ‘yes’ and God kept His promise. He is doing the same for me. It may sound strange, but I am still learning and God is still intervening.

To young people across the United States, General Peddle shares this message:

God loves you and is the best friend ever. Have fun, make friends, and share everything you have with others. Be your best and become what and who God wants you to be (we will need more Generals in the future). Talk to God and while you do, say a prayer for the General. Remember, if you are part of it, we have a great future as The Salvation Army.

Don’t Miss the Glory!

Heard of The Glory Shop? It’s a Salvation Army-run 10-month school for discipleship and performing arts, right in the heart of Times Square, New York. From September through June, young adults are discipled in worship, community, the Word, and creativity.

Over the course of the year, students participate in daily street-evangelism, epic times of prayer and worship, learn about Shakespeare and script writing, and even put on a full off-Broadway show. “The Glory Shop was an incredible experience, especially for my personal growth with God,” says previous Glory Shop study, Shante Wong from California. “I’ve experienced prayer in a whole new way.”

The Glory Shop launched Café 315, a hangout spot on Friday nights that holds open mic nights, poetry slams, trivia nights, and karaoke. This past year, students even headed to Riker’s Island Prison to teach Shakespeare and improv acting to the inmates and ended the year by writing and directing a short musical from scratch.

This incredible ministry is open to those aged 18 to 35 who love God and have a desire to deepen their understanding of His Word and share it with others. Why don’t you pray about applying? Check out www.thegloryshop.com.

Band of Brothers

These brothers are unstoppable! Since 2013, Steve (23), Sam (20), and Jared Turner (18) have been dedicating their free time to lend a hand. “Serving in The Salvation Army has given me a whole new perspective on helping others,” says Jared. “[We’ve] helped with everything from feeding homeless neighbors in our community to emergency disaster fires and bell ringing.” That’s not to mention the 200 beds they helped install at a Salvation Army homeless shelter, which Sam says “was one of the most rewarding things [he’s] ever done.”

Worth It!

The Salvation Army’s WORTH program is helping women in rural Kenya become financially self-sufficient through a savings and micro-loan system run by the participants themselves. The women teach each other literacy and numeracy, and learn a skill they can use to start a small business. 20,260 women are registered in the program.

Online sexual exploitation of children – or OSEC – is a horrible new form of human trafficking rampant in the Philippines. Sometimes facilitated by the victims’ own parents, children are forced to perform sexual acts in their own homes while a stranger a world away pays to watch via webcam.

The Salvation Army World Service Office’s PAVE program seeks to address these children’s unique needs at a residential facility where they receive psychological, emotional and spiritual support and can begin the process of healing their trauma.

Rose Parade

tsa band parade

The Tournament of Roses Parade is an iconic New Year’s Day tradition which began on January 1, 1890.

This year marked the 100th consecutive year that The Salvation Army marched in the parade. Young people from all over the nation came together with invited musicians from India, Brazil, the Caribbean and South Africa.

Approximately 340 people marched in eight bands after only having one rehearsal together! The parade route is 5.5 miles long and took over two hours from beginning to end. This is The Salvation Army’s largest open air (an outdoor witness and demonstration of the love of God)!

The Army’s Gone to Gabon!

Did you know that in July 2018 the central African nation of Gabon became the 129th country where The Salvation Army’s presence is officially recognized? Now The Salvation Army is present in 130+ countries. Find out more about the five global zones of The Salvation Army at salvationarmy.org/ihq/zones.
