“Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes”

As Christians, we must be careful to remember that we obey God not because we are saved by the Law, but rather we obey because we love Him who gave it. By Micah Trimmer

Hundreds of years after the death of Caesar, ape societies are flourishing; but with a malevolent faction on the rise and the discovery of a special human, the past and present will coalesce to determine the future. Longtime readers may remember that I reviewed “War for the Planet of the Apes” in 2017, and since then, I’ve become a fan of the rebooted series. While I don’t think that this most recent film, “Kingdom,” is quite on par with its predecessors, it is still a very good film. It did feel a bit long and there were some creative decisions that I’m not sold on yet, but it’s still an engaging film that successfully establishes new characters in a changed world full of potential. Strong performances bolster fantastic CGI, and the overgrown environments are used in creative ways (for example, a village is built around derelict cell towers). There is much that has been said about the distortion of history and the twisting of old wisdom; however, one of the most interesting parts of the movie to me was Noa’s relationship to the law. In a way, he perceives the world through it, to the point where he will remind others: “It’s the law.”  This message is much less overt in comparison to the other, but no less important. As Christians, we must be careful to remember that we obey God not because we are saved by the Law, but rather we obey because we love Him who gave it. (Check out Galatians 2:16 and John 14:15-24!)
