Want to “go green” this year but have no idea where to start or what to do? Implementing sustainable and eco-friendly habits can make a significant impact on the environment. What are practical habits that you can implement?

1. Reduce single-use plastics.

Instead of using plastic bags at the grocery store or for your lunches, opt for reusable grocery bags and containers. These reusable bags, bottles and containers minimize plastic waste.

2. Conserve energy.

When you leave a room, do you turn off the light? Turn off lights and unplug devices when not in use. Use energy-efficient gadgets and LED bulbs. Turn off the TV when you’re not using it, and avoid using it as background noise.

3. Thrift!

Buy secondhand clothes or shop from  brands that prioritize sustainability. Looking to clean out your closet at the start of the new year? Upcycling (or reusing) old clothes is a great eco-friendly option.

4. Use eco-friendly transportation.

Walk, bike, carpool or use public transportation to reduce carbon emissions.

5. Recycle and compost.

Recycle paper, plastic and glass. Also, try composting! Composting food scraps can reduce landfill waste and create nutrient-rich soil.

6. Go digital.

You may be holding a paper magazine in your hands right now, but when faced with the choice of digital over physical, choose digital. Go for e-books and take  notes on your device. If taking notes on hard copy, use both sides of the paper.

7. Educate and advocate!

Sustainability happens when we educate ourselves and others. Talk about sustainability with friends and family. Advocate for eco-friendly practices at school and  in your community.
