Are you studying for an exam, a standardized test or a regular assignment? What outcomes are you working toward? Be realistic when setting your schedule. Experts say that it’s better to spend a short time daily studying for each class than to try and cram for an exam in an extended study session. To help, here are 7 habits for effective studying!

1. Location matters!
Find a comfortable place, but not so comfortable that you’ll fall asleep or be easily distracted. Maybe you focus better outside or in a library. Find a place that will allow you to easily access your study material and focus on your tasks.

2. Set goals—but be realistic.

3. Avoid distractions.
Are you truly able to focus when you’re listening to your favorite playlist, or do you get caught up in the beat? If so, try listening to soundtrack scores or the instrumental version of your favorite songs.

4. Study in a group.
You might find that studying with friends or classmates might help you retain the information better. Quizzing each other, with friendly competition, might help you memorize the material.

5. Create a tailored study system.
Have you ever searched through your notes, trying to find that fact? Color-coded index cards, highlighters, pens or post-it notes can help visually differentiate between subjects in your notes. Use symbols in the margin to remind you where to look.

6. Take good notes.
Have you ever told yourself, “I don’t need to write that down; I’ll remember it”? You won’t remember it. Write clear notes. Research suggests that students retain more information when they handwrite notes than when they don’t.

7. Manage your stress.
Go for a walk, take a power nap, eat a quick snack or text your bestie. Taking a break and doing something you enjoy will decrease your stress levels.
