“Wreck-it Ralph” has come a long way from his sulky villain days. In his opinion, he has the perfect life: a stable job, the respect of his peers and even a best friend in Vanellope von Schweetz. However, when a rare replacement part is needed to save his best friend’s game, Ralph and Vanellope must brave the vast open world known as the Internet. “Ralph Breaks the Internet” is solid enough to entertain most. Personally, I found it to be a mixed bag.
All of the voice talent is spot on, the visuals are as impressive as ever, and some of the self-aware humor lands correctly. However, that’s the main issue with the film: it tries to be too self-aware. The plot comes off as weak and feels sluggish when the characters take long detours to show off common internet tropes. It’s a fun idea, but less is more. The film lacks the heart and subtlety that was put into its predecessor. That’s not to say it’s without a lesson. At its core, the movie is about friendship. In the ESV version, Philippians 2:4 says: “Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.”
“‘Ralph Breaks the Internet’ is solid enough to entertain most. Personally, I found it to be a mixed bag.”
