“Sarah’s Oil” Is A Decent Faith-Filled Movie

What would you do if you sat on an ocean of riches and no one believed you? What would you do if they did? Inspired by real events, “Sarah’s Oil” isn’t the best film I’ve watched this year, but it’s not bad. Naya Desir-Johnson plays the title character well but is greatly helped by a solid supporting cast of veteran actors. Zachary Levi has just the right amount of charm to make you question his character’s motives throughout most of the film. His character’s on-screen friendship with Sarah is arguably the best part of the movie. The flow of the scenes is a bit clunky, but not distractingly so. Sarah’s faith is an important part of the story, and a moment that stood out to me is when Sarah confronts Bert about his decision-making to let him know that she cares about his soul. In Matthew 16:26 (ESV), Jesus asked his disciples, “For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul?” The Savior came to save your soul, and that’s more important than all the riches in the world.

What happens when you gather 21 young chefs to the cathedral of cooking? A competition for $500,000, obviously. While the show tries to give a high-class spin to a pretty tired formula, the show feels more like an expensive, thinly disguised advertisement for the Culinary Institute of America.

When young Stevie Ting finds a magical chance to save her family, there’s no risk she won’t take. Even if it means working alongside her twerpy little brother. Aside from a few off-color moments, “In Your Dreams” is a decently fun and creative adventure.
