Leo Borlock is an average kid at an average school in an average town where nothing ever happens. Everything changes however when an anything-but-average stranger named “Star Girl” enters the scene and turns everything upside down. Based on the well-known novel by Jerry Spinelli, Disney’s “Star Girl” seeks to bring an updated version of the story to the public via their ever-expanding streaming service Disney+. Fans of the book should know that the movie deviates a little from its literary counterpart, however, it’s message of self-acceptance and growing into your own person remains unchanged. Grace VanderWaal, the breakout star of “America’s Got Talent” season 11, gives a fantastic performance as the confident and quirky titular character with a sincerity that often eludes even seasoned actors. The film makes good use of its music to shape and progress the film, utilizing a solid mixture of original and licensed music. Honestly, I found the movie to be surprisingly endearing. The film made me feel like I was in high school again, a time that I look back at fondly. While I’ve never read the book, all in all I think that “Star Girl” is a fun watch from start to finish.
