How to Get Out of a Winter Slump
As you flip the calendar to face the greener months, you can step out of your winter slump and into the sunlight. The temperature plummets, and so does your motivation. You may have found yourself in a winter slump. But the end, like the sun in the northern hemisphere, is near. As you flip the calendar to face the greener months, you can step out of your winter slump and into the sunlight.
Set a goal.
While January is widely known for setting goals and resolutions, March can serve as a touchpoint for renewing a goal or setting a new one. Find something motivating to work on throughout the season — like nailing down an exercise routine, finishing that book on your nightstand, or harboring a new skill.
SWITCH up your routine.
Your routine might have shifted to fit the cold weather. Take this season change to switch up daily habits like exercising at a different time in the day, making plans with friends in the evening, or waking up an hour earlier to reflect in your journal.
Start new spring traditions.
Invite new seasonal, springtime rhythms and traditions into your life. New traditions can include taking a hike or packing for a picnic on the first day of the month.
Create a new playlist.
Music can be a wonderful way to dig yourself out of the winter blues. Decades ago, teenagers made mixtapes. Today’s technology allows you to pull from countless songs to create and share a personalized playlist. Combine songs that are happy, fun, and light-hearted to keep the spring energy alive.
Bring joy to others.
The smallest joys matter. Hold the door open for the person behind you. Buy flowers for your roommate. Volunteer at a shelter. Write a letter to a friend who lives in another city.
Move your body.
Remaining sedentary will keep your slump alive. Try walking outside for only 20 minutes or take the stairs whenever possible. Get up and move your body — you’ll start to see your mood change.
