How Can I Make a Difference in My Community Through My Faith?

Making a difference in your community can seem like an impossible task for a young person. However, you need to focus on what you can do based on your talents and time. So, ask yourself: What am I good at, and how much time do I have to give? You have time and talents to share with others. If you are talented in theater and the arts, you can help plan a performance at local theater in town. If you have time apart from school and family commitments, volunteer your time at the food pantry or an animal shelter in your city.

Mother Teresa said, “We can do no great things, only small things with great love.” Although you may feel like your time and talents are limited, you can make a difference in your community. If you are unsure where to start, pray and ask God to show you. You can also talk to family, friends or your local leaders who can guide you to making the right choice.

How do I start reading the Bible if I’ve never read the Bible or attended church?

Why are you feeling interested in reading the Bible? God is pursuing you. He’s looking to connect in relationship with you—and that’s a great thing! To start, I suggest two simple ideas. First, I suggest you find a Christian who you can trust, and ask them about reading the Bible together. The Bible was meant to be read with other people and draw us into deeper relationship with each other. It is one of the richest ways that we experience Jesus. Secondly, I suggest you find a simple Bible reading plan. You can find these in the YouVersion app (free in the App Store), and you can invite other people to read with you. Start with a simple book, like the book of John that tells the story of Jesus. Happy reading!

How can I share my faith with others around me?

Sharing your faith without sounding “preachy” is all about being genuine and relatable. Start by building real friendships, because people are more open to talking about faith when they trust you. Also, you could show your faith through acts of kindness and service—it can make others curious about what drives you. Share personal stories and experiences to make your faith more relational. Be ready to explain your beliefs in a clear and logical way, answering any questions or addressing doubts they might have. Honesty is key, so be open about your faith journey and any struggles you’ve faced. Share your faith naturally and respectfully; this will create opportunities for meaningful conversations.
