Who doesn’t like Flamin’ Hot Cheetos? Like my younger brother, the United States has been enthralled with the spicy flavoring of Flamin’ Hot Cheetos for decades, netting the Frito-Lay company millions in sales every year. “Flamin’ Hot” tells the story of Richard Monteñez, a former gangster turned janitor working at a Frito-Lay factory in California. The movie as a whole is heartwarming and comedic; however it does rely heavily on the historical racism trope for most of its conflicts and contains more profanity than I’m comfortable with. While the Christian faith is mentioned (and even put into the plot), its depiction and representation are not the most positive for the majority of the runtime.

Overall, I enjoyed the film. Its message of hard work and perseverance in the face of adversity is something that everyone can aspire to; for every victory, Richard and his family are faced with another challenge. Success doesn’t come easily or quickly. I know the following passage has been used frequently, but I can’t think of one more perfect to summarize: “So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up. Therefore, whenever we have the opportunity, we should do good to everyone—especially to those in the family of faith” (Galatians 6:9-10).
