A Brave New Era for Captain America
"Underneath all the superhero glitz and CGI glamor lies a message about change and trying to grow beyond the past."Rating: PG-13 | Platform: Disney+
After everything the world has been through, Sam Wilson finds himself against an unseen enemy at the highest level pulling the strings. “Captain America: Brave New World” is not the worst film that Marvel has released. It has quality moments and many of the ideas had potential, but the writing doesn’t let them reach it. Harrison Ford provided a surprisingly impressive performance, leveraging his age to bring more humanity to President Thaddeus Ross. Unfortunately, besides the under-realized script, the film insists on cursing incessantly, reminding me that many Hollywood writers truly don’t know how to write good dialogue.
Underneath all the superhero glitz and CGI glamor lies a message about change and trying to grow beyond the past. All of us may have things about ourselves that need to change and while we try our best, only God can truly make that happen. After his sin with Bathsheba, David wrote in Psalm 51, “Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a loyal spirit within me” (Psalm 51:10). I don’t know what happened in your past, the choices you or others have made, but I do know that when we are conformed to Christ, we truly are made new.

Flow
Rating: PG | Platform: Max
Winning the Golden Globe for best animated picture, “Flow” follows a black cat in a post-human earth as its world is overturned by a monstrous flood. While it’s a bit too artsy of a film for my taste, the story and characters are communicated effectively without any words being spoken.

Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man
Rating: TV-PG | Platform: Disney+
Peter Parker is back again in a new Marvel-adjacent universe. While the animation, story and acting are all executed well with a slightly different flavor, Disney’s continual decision to force unnecessary cursing and the occult is enough to bring down an otherwise enjoyable experience.
