6 Tips to Start a Sabbath Routine
We practice Sabbath for spiritual reflection, prayer, and worship.Sabbath means to “to stop, to cease, or to keep.” Its meaning is rooted in God’s rest following the six days of creation (Genesis 2:2-3). We practice Sabbath for spiritual reflection, prayer, and worship. It allows us to reconnect with God and take a break from the busyness of life. How can you set a Sabbath routine?
1. Choose a day.
Well, yes. While many Christians choose to practice Sabbath on Sunday, known traditionally as the day of rest, you can choose to practice Sabbath on any day of the week. Choose a day that works for you.
2. note your Sabbath day in your calendar.
Now that you chose a day, mark this day in your calendar—with a pen, no less—so that you can commit to it and not forget!
3. Start slow.
Give yourself grace. If you mess up, like by playing video games or scrolling through Instagram on your phone, don’t sweat it. Try again next time. It takes time to build a habit, to build a discipline. Keep at it.
4. Unplug and connect.
The social media apps will still be there the next day! The notifications will still be there. Turn off your phone, and put it away in a drawer. Away from your phone (or any device), let your thoughts run free. Take a walk outside. Reflect and let your thoughts swirl inside your head without trying to shove them down. Meditate and reflect.
5. TELL LOVED ONES ABOUT IT.
Communicate to your friends and family when you’re practicing Sabbath. Practice saying no to prioritize this practice.
6. Nourish your body.
Take care of yourself! This doesn’t just mean mentally or spiritually, but physically as well. Eat healthy foods and move your body. This fitness routine can be as simple as walking outside. Don’t fill your body with junk food. Reach for fruits and vegetables. Get a healthy amount of sleep the night before.
