“The Polar Express” (2004)

If you went to elementary school in the 2000s, December probably included a “Polar Express Day,” a day when you were allowed to wear your pajamas, drink hot chocolate, and, of course, watch “The Polar Express.” Maybe it’s the nostalgia speaking, but the music from the noteworthy Christmas movie is absolute magic. The title song itself, with its iconic train whistle, children’s choir, and narration from Tom Hanks, fully captures the movie’s whimsy. The fun continues in the jazzy hit, “Hot Chocolate,” which is bound to get stuck in your head. We’re shifted to reflection when we hear little Billy longing for presents at Christmas. I’m always uplifted and inspired by the song “Believe,” sung beautifully by Josh Groban. It’s amazing that music, especially when used in film, has the power to not only tell a story, but to evoke feelings that stay with us well after the credits.

“A Charlie Brown Christmas” (1965)

As soon as I feel the first chill in the air and see the Christmas decorations start to show up in stores, “Christmas Time is Here” from “A Charlie Brown Christmas” immediately pops in my head. This jazz soundtrack, unique and bold for its time, is a timeless classic.

“Home Alone” (1990)

It was said in the documentary “Music by John Williams” that the score from “Home Alone” made the film into the success that it was — I believe that to be 100% true. John Williams perfectly captured the magic and mystery of Christmas, giving us a soundtrack for the season.
