As an eighth-generation Salvationist (member of The Salvation Army), Brenden Armendariz has called The Salvation Army his home church for his entire life.

Then at age 15, he heard the call to officership at a commissioning event. “I was filled with a warm, burning, and compelling feeling,” he shared, “and I found my way up to the stage.” He now understands it was the Holy Spirit. But in the years following, he ignored it and pursued other self-made plans. It wasn’t until many years later at a young adult retreat when he was met with the same undeniable feeling. Immediately, he started listing reasons not to become an officer (pastor). But as the event wore on, each sermon, Bible study, and conversation magnified that feeling. “By the end of the weekend, I found myself at the altar, praying a prayer of surrender and desire to be obedient to God’s calling on my life.”

He stayed true to the calling and enrolled at the College for Officer Training (CFOT) in Ranchos Palos Verdes, CA. One thing that surprised him the most about life at CFOT was the community. He arrived at the school not expecting to fit in, but within a short timespan, his session mates (cadets) became family. “We have shared experiences that will bond us for life,” he said. “We have laughed, cried, and fought together, and I am grateful that I have my session mates to lean on as fellow brothers and sisters in Christ.”

Brenden is a husband and father first, and at CFOT, he is learning how to balance these roles with ministry. He leans on Paul’s words on managing one’s household in 1 Timothy 3:1-7. “During our time at CFOT,” he reflected, “we have been encouraged to put our family and marriage first, to keep Christ at the center of our lives and from that, an authentic ministry will flow.” Spiritual disciplines allow him to remain rooted and grounded in truth. Brenden commits to daily prayer, which helps him through any difficulties that arise. “My grounding in God has been made possible and strengthened through prayer.”

Dig Deeper

For young Salvationists who receive the call to officership, Brenden offers one word: obedience. “God doesn’t call you to be the best or the most equipped. He doesn’t even call you to be ready. He calls upon you to be obedient.”

Did You Know?

Did you know that the popular holiday song, “Silver Bells,” was partly inspired by Salvation Army bellringing on New York City streets?

Jay Livingston and Ray Evans, the composers of this song, are a well-known composing-songwriting duo. Bing Crosby and Carol Richards recorded the song in 1950. It later debuted in the 1951 comedy film, “The Lemon Drop Kid.”

Ray Evans remembered the inspiration to be a tiny bell sitting on a desk in his office. And initially called it “Tinkle Bell.” Jay Livingston later recalled seeing Salvation Army bellringers on New York City streets, serving as part of the inspiration for the song.
