The Wesley Covenant Prayer

"Pray this Covenant Prayer and say it with many Christians past and present, 'Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, thou art mine, and I am thine.'"

The Salvation Army owes its theology largely to the 18th century evangelist and Anglican priest, John Wesley. Although William and Catherine Booth (founders of The Salvation Army) formally left Methodism, John Wesley’s missional movement, to begin The Salvation Army, they never left their Wesleyan theological roots.

John adapted this Covenant Prayer from a prayer used by his parents. It remains a beloved description of the holy life and our relationships with God. Written in the 18th century, the language will sound a bit old school, but the message of the prayer remains as relevant as ever. Pray this to God as you offer yourself to Him completely because of all He has given you. We can never out-give God. Of all He has given us, the best gift is Himself. Pray this Covenant Prayer and say it with many Christians past and present, “Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, thou art mine, and I am thine.”

Prayer

I am no longer my own, but thine.

Put me to what thou wilt,
rank me with whom thou wilt.

Put me to doing, put me to suffering.

Let me be employed by thee
or laid aside for thee,

exalted for thee or brought low for thee.

Let me be full, let me be empty.

Let me have all things,
let me have nothing.

I freely and heartily yield all things

to thy pleasure and disposal.

And now, O glorious and blessed God,

Father, Son, and Holy Spirit,

thou art mine, and I am thine. So be it.

And the covenant which
I have made on earth,

let it be ratified in heaven. Amen.
